Lesson 1: Introduction to Yoga: History and Philosophy

Welcome to Your Yoga Journey

Namaste! Welcome to this transformative course. Before we begin physical practice, it's essential to understand what yoga truly means.

What is Yoga?

The word 'yoga' comes from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', meaning 'to unite' or 'to join'. Yoga is the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras describe eight aspects of yoga practice:

  1. Yama - Ethical standards and integrity
  2. Niyama - Self-discipline and spiritual observances
  3. Asana - Physical postures
  4. Pranayama - Breath control
  5. Pratyahara - Withdrawal of senses
  6. Dharana - Concentration
  7. Dhyana - Meditation
  8. Samadhi - Bliss or enlightenment

Your Practice Space

Set up a clean, quiet space for your practice. You'll need:

  • A yoga mat or comfortable surface
  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  • A water bottle
  • An open mind and heart

Remember, yoga is not about perfection - it's about progress and self-discovery.
